Remote Update Follies - Or I must be Crazy

Today was fun..  One the consultants that I know wanted help updating her home network.  WiFi had failed.  So talk her thru new router setup, and install of access point.  Use GoToPC  setup up vpn sessions and do updates on Laptops.   It is a pain, but saves driving or flying to Lodi, CA.

Have Fun!

Updating Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security on an SBS 2003 Server

Well yesterday was uh, fun.   I had to update a SBS 2003 servers' Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security from Ver 6.0 to 7.0 Build 3.

Called support @Trend Micro and was assured was a Simple Upgrade. ( Never is with Trend Micro).  Downloaded current version of Software.  Run Installer.  Everything was ok untill Access denied message on folder.  Call support.  Asked to kill installer.  Protested that this would create havoc.  Did abort.  Restart installer.  Run Custom install, Same error, support put me on hold and dropped call.

Repeat re-run same crap with second agent.   Also dropped call.

Third agent actually stayed with me on call.  Suggested Restart.  Removed couple of folders.  Install finished after 1.5 hours, but local security agent install hung.  Reboot server.  Download agent un-installer.  No good.  Resorted to manual Regedit removal.  Sigh.   Fixed problem, and install finished.

Don't use Trend Micro on Servers,  I've had better luck with Panda, AVG, Norman, or others.   Sigh.

Your Mileage may Vary.

Linux and Windows 7 Mixed boot on HP Pavilion laptop

I decided to convert a laptop that I have to Dual boot both Fedora 15 and Windows 7 Pro.

I've added a second hard drive (500Gb) to this machine in the second hard disk bay.  This laptop does not allow you to select the booting internal hard disk so I will need to use a boot manager to bring up Linux or Windows 7.

Fedora 14 X86_64 loaded with zero problems,  except for the new Gnome 3 desktop, which is a puzzle to use.  I kind of see the direction they are attempting to go,  but it is still not comfortable to use.   Fedora was loaded on the 1st hard disk.

Windows 7 was is a pain in ass in a dual boot configuration.   It wants to be the "booting drive".  I defeated this by removing the 1st drive with Fedora 15 on it, and rebooted to install Windows 7 on the 2nd drive, which is now seen as drive 0 by Bios.   I finished the install, checked that it was a working clean install and proceeded to reinstall the Fedora 15 Drive.

To boot Windows 7 I had to add a "Grub" loader entry in the menu.lst file in /boot/grub/.   This is the menu entry that worked...

title Windows 7 Pro
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader  +1
boot

It looks crazy and it sort of is. The two Map commands reverse the drive order,
and the rootnoverify tells grup that the second drive is usable for boot, makeactive fakes setting the drive as primary and active on the boot partition, chainloader +1 reads in the windows 7 boot loader from the 2nd drive, and boot starts the load.

It works.

Well, this sucks.. But I am not very surprised...

Hearings were held in July 7 on the possible infection of hardware and software with Malware
manufactured in East Asia. Below is a Direct Quote from the website "Fast Company".

More bad news for PC and Mac viruses

Bootkit Viruses for Windows are back after a hiatus for about 13 years.

And Mac owners - Don't assume you computers' ass is safe.  Take a look at this link

What kind of PC is best for U

Choosing a computer for your use is like buying a powered toothbrush;  Some love it and most hate it.

Remember that the most important question is does it run the software you need!  It could be a laptop or a desktop.    For the last 10+ years most business software runs on Microsoft OS PC platform.   However, in the last 3 years or so Apple is making inroads in to the business marketplace.

Tablets like the IPAD are great for email or web browsing, or most cell phones can read email or the
web if you can read the damn thing.

Macintosh PCs can run Microsoft windows software with Parallels or Wine for Macintosh.

Most folks will end you with a mix of computing devices,  perhaps a phone and laptop.
